“Use the internet to search data (the data should be at least annually but preferably quarterly) for the following major macroeconomic indicators related to the countries that you are assigned to:
1- GDP (Gross Domestic Product)
2- CPI (Consumer Price Index)
3- Inflation Rate
4- Unemployment Rates (it is preferred to find data regarding labor force participation of different groups of age or gender)
Notice that the data should be the most recent data that is publicly available and you should have it for minimum of 5 years (notice that this is 5 years NOT 5 quarters so if you find quarterly data you should have 20 quarters) but the longer the period the better so that you can talk about CHANGES/ GROWTH in those numbers.
You also have to find at least 3 articles/ web sources explaining the general economic conditions in the country assigned to you. Make sure that you search for some good articles because this can help you a lot when you are trying to explain what is happening to those macroeconomic indicators that you found and what the reasons are behind changes in such measures. (You are more than welcome to use more than 3 articles but 3 is the minimum. Do not include the actual articles with the report).
Second: Report Outline
Using the data you collected you need to generate a report that has the following sections:
First: General Introduction about your assigned countrys economy (any useful and interesting facts it would be fruitful if there are any comparisons about the past and present)
Second: Discussion about the countrys GDP referring to all the points that we mentioned in class lectures when explaining a countrys GDP. You need to also include a table (s) with the numbers you found. Charts and or graphs are also recommended. Dont forget to talk about the sources of growth in GDP (for example if the growth comes from specific sectors).
Third: Discussion about the countrys CPI. Same points mentioned above apply here as well (text tables and charts).
Fourth: Discussion about the countrys inflation rate. What are reasons behind such inflation? What are the impacts of such inflation? Is the government trying to do anything to control this inflation?
Fifth: Discuss unemployment rates. How has the unemployment been in your assigned country? Is it specific for certain labor groups? Is the country trying to address such problem? Is it obvious that the country has unemployment problems or you couldnt find anything specific regarding to this point?
Finally: You need to finish your report by a one paragraph conclusion. Just how do you think overall the economy looks like in this country how does that impact the living standards do you expect it to improve (based on your reading of how the government is or is not trying to improve the economy and any other relevant factors that could enhance the economy)?
Appendix: You should include the list of all references and sources used even for charts if you used some from the internet. You can use as many as sources as you want but at minimum you should have 3 good articles. You cannot completely copy and paste. You have to re-write the information in your own words.
NOTE: I do not expect this report to be so long but I dont want to put length requirements either because it could depend on the country assigned to you. At least I would expect one paragraph on each section mentioned above (along with tables and charts).
Third: Due Date
Deadline for the assignment is May 27th 2015. Your report should have your student names and ID # on the cover page. In addition EACH GROUP should submit the assignment on E-MAILS by 11:59 pm of the same day.
