Assignment: You will write a 6-8 (1500-2000 words) page paper that identifies problems and solutions in performing leadership in the public sector today with possible solutions.
Instructions: You are to choose someone who in your opinion reflects high leadership skills. This should be someone you respect and whom you feel will be a good interviewee. This could be someone in government the volunteer sector non-profit sector civic group political leader etc. It should be someone whom you feel defines the qualities that are important to being a good leader. This paper is NOT about this person personally. The paper is specifically about the problems experienced (by leaders such as the person who is being interviewed) and solutions. This is a formal research paper. The person interviewed is used as a live research source and documented as such in your works cited page. You will need two (2) additional scholastic resources for this paper. If you use your texts you will need to document this and list them on the works cited page. The texts themselves do not count as part of your three resources for the paper.
The person interviewed may NOT be a relative spouse partner or representative of a religious group or organization. (Ex. Minister preacher nun priest church counselor elder deacon bishop etc.) When students use these people for their interviewee the paper ceases to be about the issues/challenges of leadership but becomes a non-scholastic testimony to how wonderful and/or self-sacrificing this person is. I will not accept/nor grade any such paper!
You should begin developing questions for the interview during the first two weeks of class. Feel free to email me a draft of your questions for feedback. Here are some areas that you should look into:
1. Appendix I will include a very short biographical sketch. Who is this person? What is his/her background education and what organization do they work for? Write one sentence defending what made you see them as an excellent representation of leadership. What kind of leader are they? (ex. Transitional etc.) You will include (in this appendix) why you feel this person is an effective leader? You need to identify your own criteria.
3. During the interview you will need to explore with this person at least one and preferably two complex leadership situations (problems) and or decisions that they had to engage in within the last five years. Go into detail regarding this decision or issue why it was important what was done why and how did this decision reflect highly effective leadership?
4. Based on your readings in the course develop at least 3-4 questions that touch on various concepts from leadership theory that you wish to ask of your leader. These will vary by person. They should be open ended. Please do not make the person who was kind enough to grant you an interview feel that they are being tested. Remember the time factor when working with your interviewee.
You will write up your interview results research and paper in the following manner.
A brief abstract will precede your paper.
1. Paper will include an introduction related to public leadership today including a brief description of the leader bio sketch and why he or she was chosen. 1-2 pages.
2. A review of the key problems or issues derived in the interviewees experience within their leadership from your interview. An analysis of the leadership problem/s that arose during your interview that you further explored and researched. 1-2 pages.
3. A review of findings regarding these particular problems/challenges in leadership today. Present and defend possible resolutions to these problems. 1-2 pages.
4. Identify possible complications/further issues that could arise within the leadership problems outlined earlier within your paper. 1-2 pages
5. Summary and conclusion. How did your focused analysis of this leader help better your understanding concerning what leadership is all about? Did it change your mind on anything? Do you now have new insights or did the analysis confirm pre-existing ideas? 1-2 pages.
6. In all of your analyses be sure to incorporate and document text and outside research. Do not fail to identify your interviewee as one of your resources in your works cited page. APA format!
7. Include a bibliography/works cited page and appendix with questions attached
