Begin writing Chapter 3: Research Design & Methodology
The main purpose of Chapter 3 of your Doctoral Project is to formulate research design and methodology of your Doctoral Project.
If the Learner is completing a theoretical study within Chapter Three a description of the following will be included:
1) The intended method of analyzing the literature
2) A brief discussion of the underlying philosophical assumptions of theoretical studies and
3) A well-reasoned articulation of how theoretical studies are legitimate alternative research procedures in psychology.
Once completed then the Learner proceeds directly to the Data Analysis (below).
If the Learner is completing a qualitative study the entire sequence below for Chapter Three is to be included.
Re-statement of the Problem and Overview
For a qualitative study for the introduction of Chapter Three the Learner provides a brief restatement of the problem and an overview of the study at the beginning of this chapter. A description of the method should follow. For example if a phenomenological study is being conducted there will need to be a description of how the Learner will be employing a qualitative research design using a specified number of subjects. This section of the method chapter should include a discussion of how qualitative methods (e.g. phenomenological or case studies) are legitimate alternative research procedures.
Subjects
For a qualitative study the Learner describes the location of the subjects. The Learner discusses the criteria for selecting those subjects and the process by which they were selected. For example what characteristics do they possess that make them suitable for the area of investigation? Provide the number of participants in the study including any important distinctions existing between them (e.g. gender or ethnicity).
Data Collection
For a qualitative study the Learner provides a concise but thorough description of the steps he or she will undertake in order to collect data from the subjects. Additionally describe in detail the instruments to be used to facilitate the data collection. If for example a field study is to be conducted describe will be observed the interview schedule or questionnaires indicate the length and number of interviews and whether the interviews will be recorded. The focus of questions or criteria for each protocol should be clearly linked to the literature reviewed in Chapter Two. (The protocol is included as an appendix to the completed study.) Note that this section is written in such a way that the reader would be able to duplicate the procedures.
Data Analysis
For a theoretical study as stated above Chapter Three is only secondarily a method chapter. The introduction and first chapter have already spelled out the various perspectives being adopted for the data analysis and what will be expected in terms of a description of the method or way of proceeding. Rather the third chapter develops in-depth the topic from the chosen perspective(s). Here in the data analysis section is where all key points and observations of the study are distilled broken down and thoroughly examined.
For a qualitative study indicate the structure and analysis of the data will be performed. If for example a qualitative method has been used and a number of protocol descriptions from subjects are collected clearly indicate how their descriptions will be analyzed. Detailed and specific steps should be included. It is important to utilize a research methods book to detail this process. The intention should be that anyone who wishes could repeat the steps in the analysis.
